The Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses is one of the most recognizable sunglasses models in the world. Since being introduced in the 80s, they have been an instant hit.  Interestingly, its iconic browline style was actually introduced 30 years before the first ever Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses was made; browline glasses first became popular in the 50s and 60s.

It is widely believed that the first browline style was designed by Ray-Ban but, they were in fact produced by a lesser-known brand called American Optical Sirmonts.

The Browline Style

The browline style of the Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses is typified by the upper part of the frame rim. It is distinctively bolder, helping to frame your eyes –  just like real eyebrows! (Click to Tweet) The design enjoyed a decade of popularity in the 50s and accounted for half of all eyewear sales at the time. Its association with authority and institution, however, saw the style dwindle in popularity between the 60s and 70s and it was not until the late 70s (largely thanks to their appearance in the film Moonlighting, starring Bruce Willis) that the browline style bounced back into fashion. Although Ray-Ban already dominated the eyewear market by that time, they were quick to develop their own version and alas, the Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses was born.

Evolution of the Ray-Ban Clubmaster Sunglasses

Over the next ten years, the Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses skyrocketed in popularity. They appeared in two of the best-known films of the 90s: Malcolm X starring Denzel Washington (1992) and Falling Down starring Michael Douglas (1993). The model shed its conservative image and increasingly became a symbol of retro, chic style. Today, it’s an icon like other popular Ray-Ban models such as the Wayfarer and Aviator.

The Clubmaster Collection

As well as the classic model, Ray-Ban has introduced some interesting variations such as the Oversized model, the Folding Clubmaster, the Fleck Clubmaster, the Wood Clubmaster and the Aluminium Clubmaster. All are great for both men and women wanting to add a little retro touch.

This is of course where it all started. Inspired by the popularity of the browline style, Ray-Ban introduced their own model in the 80s and to much success. So what defines the Clubmaster? The classic model is identified by the round lenses and thick upper rim of the frame which help to frame your eyes.
